Need download CD burning software for iBook G3

Have Roxio Toast Platinum at home on desktop system on which we burn all our CDs; unfortunately didn't think to install in on iBook G3 (OS 10.4.11) and will be on the road for the next two months. Can anyone suggest where I can find a free download of even the most basic CD burning software compatible with this iBook? Would hate to have to buy another one when we have one at home.... Many thanks!

PowerMac G3, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 256 megs RAM, lots of HD space

You can burn CDs with Apple's built-in software in Tiger. Just go to Mac Help in the Finder and look for 'burning CD'.

Tried it and it works, which is great! HOWEVER, it makes CDs readable ONLY by Macs; in our case we have to do something for one of our sons whom we've 'lost to the other side,' so we need something that will make CDs for both Mac and (ugh!) Windows. Still looking for suggestions--thanks!

According to the onboard Mac Help:

"The Finder can burn files to a CD or DVD. You can then use that disc as a backup, send it to friends, or copy those files to another computer. Mac OS X burns discs that can also be used on Windows computers and other types of computers. The disc uses an HFS Plus/ISO 9660 hybrid format with these file systems: HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge."

Are you sure they will not work in Windows?

Hmmm, that's puzzling.... I tried it in the Mac and it worked fine. I then tried it in a Windows computer and got an error message that said something to the effect that the CD was corrupt OR it was not readable by the computer. I took that to mean that it's solely a Mac CD that cannot be used with Windows (since I know it's not corrupt). When I burn the CD on the iBook, do I have to specify something that will make it cross-platform, or to your knowledge is that automatic? Many thanks!

Folks have had various problems burning CDs and reading them on other computers. They are often solved by changing to a different Color of CD, or slowing down the burning speed.

I didn't see that there was any latitude in settings in terms of using Disk Utility to burn a CD. Then again, it was the first time I tried it; I didn't even know that this utility even existed! I will look it over again to see if I can figure out different settings; thanks for the suggestion. Still would be happy to find a freeware or shareware CD burning program online to download.... (P.S. We know 'west of Boston' well, traveling there often from upstate New York!)
